The Perks of Being a Student
I think I can speak for most college students when I say sometimes we forget how lucky we really are to be able to further our education. Although it is beyond stressful at times, I try to think about all of the amazing things that come with being a student.
This is the time to truly discover your interests and be independent. You will discover new things about yourself whether that be inside or outside of the classroom walls. Regardless of your major, you will be required to take gen-eds, which may uncover an interest you never knew you had. You get to discover new skills and improve on any you already have. Networking with companies is also extremely accessible in colleges, which is almost essential for jobs and internships.
Moreover, as students we often can get things for free or for a huge discount, so take advantage of it!! To start off, counseling services. Arcadia offers amazing counseling services completely free that cover all aspects of mental health. Career counseling, resume reviews, and practice interviews are also offered through our school free of charge through the Office of Career Education. If you were to get services like this elsewhere, it would cost hundreds of dollars. This is something that I have taken advantage of and would recommend to everyone as well. That’s just a couple of the many amazing services offered. Student discounts are also HUGE and I noticed they aren’t taken advantage of nearly enough, so I wanted to list some that might be useful to our students:
- Adobe offers a 60% discount for students and teachers.
- Apple offers reduced prices for college students year round.
- HP offers deals for students when you sign up with an .edu email address.
- Lenovo gives students a percentage off sitewide when you verify your student status with ID.
- Microsoft offers a variety of discounts for students, including free Office 365 and up to 10% off select items.
- Samsung offers discounts to all students, but you can save even more by signing up for the Education Offers Program.
- Apple Music offers college students a discounted monthly rate for up to 48 months. The student subscription also includes Apple TV+ for a limited time. To be eligible, students must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree or be enrolled in an equivalent higher education program.
- Spotify offers Spotify Premium at a discount to students for up to four years, which includes no ads, an unlimited number of skips, and access to Hulu and Showtime.
- Amazon offers six months of Amazon Prime free for students, which includes free two-day shipping. After the six-month period, students are eligible for a discounted rate with all Amazon Prime Student benefits.
- Amtrak offers a 15% savings on train tickets for students between the ages of 17-24, if the purchase was made one day in advance.
These are just a handful of the many options available for student discounts. To all students, I highly recommend doing your research and taking full advantage of your education (and discounts) while you have it. Four years may sound like a lot, but it goes by in the blink of an eye.
