Students in the Gender and Sexuality Studies program will embark on an in-depth study of gender, sexuality, and women’s issues through the lens of multiple disciplines. You will gain a unique opportunity to explore your interests broadly in understanding the changing meaning of constructions of gender and sexuality and to apply feminist methodologies and frameworks to making sense of the current moment. The program will reflect the interdisciplinary mission of the University, drawing from an increasing selection of courses that explore how gender and sexuality affect your everyday lives, your identities, and the global political world. Through coursework in both the social sciences and humanities, you will develop critical tools for working toward social justice and social transformation. You will have the opportunity to focus on the intersections of gender and sexuality with race, class, sexuality, nationality, ethnicity, religion, and ability.
Our students will have the skills and knowledge to successfully pursue graduate training in a variety of fields, and/or careers related to law, education, public non-profits, public health, counseling, and social work.
Required Course
In this course, you’ll survey the effects of cultural values and social institutions on peoples lives. Additionally, you’ll analyze sources of gender inequality—especially in terms of the social construction of gender and sexuality—and examine the intersections of race, class, and sexuality for women. The course draws heavily on student participation to integrate personal gender experiences with a base of knowledge about women.
Elective Course
Explore the multiple ways that social processes and culture construct sexuality. You will study social science research on human sexuality, the meanings of sex and gender from a sociological perspective, and the cultural mythologies that shape and inform our emotions, behaviors, and attitudes.
