Keeping Work and Fun Separate
In seventh grade, due to all my health issues, I did a year of cyber school. It was necessary at the time, but it was so boring. I didn’t learn anything, and I was bored all the time. It’s a bit different now, with college being harder and more important than seventh grade. This is the most important thing I learned from that experience: keep schoolwork and fun things separate.
The first thing I did for this online semester was set up a dedicated space for schoolwork. I claimed the entirety of the dining room table, as you can see. It’s too easy to log on to Zoom from my bed and almost fall asleep during class (it’s happened). But if I keep school and fun in different environments, my brain learns that the dining room table means it’s time to focus. I’m also less comfortable, and therefore more motivated to get done.
And it was fun to decorate it over spring break. I’ve got a stack of books to read, some flowers, all that good stuff. It makes the boring assignments a little bit more bearable.
