Myers ’24 Receives $35K Scholarship from St. Andrew’s Society of Philadelphia to Study Abroad in Scotland
Emmett Myers ’24, a recent graduate with an individualized major in Gender Philosophy and Media Studies, was named the 2024-25 recipient of the $35,000 Somer’s Scholarship from the St. Andrew’s Society of Philadelphia. This scholarship is annually awarded to a student to assist in covering tuition costs and living expenses to attend the University of St. Andrews in Scotland for a full academic year.
Myers will attend the University of St. Andrews starting this fall in pursuit of a Master of Letters in Gender Studies.
“My goal for the future is to work in the field of academia for gender and queer studies,” he said. “After receiving my master’s degree from the University of St. Andrews, I hope to get my PhD. I would really love to teach in the future and to continue doing research on gender and sexuality studies, especially from a historical lens. My program at St. Andrew’s is the first step in building this career path for myself.”
After getting accepted into the University of St. Andrews for graduate school, Myers connected with Alison LaLond Wyant, EdD, executive director of Civic and Global Engagement, to learn more about the St. Andrew’s Society of Philadelphia and how to apply for this scholarship. The application process included writing prompts, a personal statement, letters of recommendation from faculty members, and an interview with the Union League of Philadelphia.
“The interview was a really great experience,” said Myers. “I was interviewed by members from the St. Andrew’s Society of Philadelphia, got to have lunch with them, and truly got to know them and the other applicants.”
After receiving the scholarship, Myers attended a robing ceremony hosted by the Society at a yacht club in the city.
“It was an honor to get to celebrate the accomplishment with the society and be able to accept such a life-changing scholarship,” Myers explained. “I’m so thankful that I get to go to graduate school at the University of St. Andrew’s and even more grateful to have a full ride due to this scholarship. This award has made me even more confident in continuing to pursue higher education. This scholarship truly allows my dreams to come to life.”
Last summer, Myers studied abroad in Scotland as a part of Arcadia’s Museum Studies Internship Program.
“I’m so excited to move to Scotland,” he explained. “Scotland makes me feel at home, and it taught me how many doors can open when you put yourself outside your comfort zone. I’m really looking forward to creating a life there for myself and reconnecting with the people I met there and being able to go back to all the places I enjoyed so deeply.”
