As part of Arcadia’s First-Year Study Abroad Experience (FYSAE), 28 first-year students departed on Aug. 29 to spend their first semester studying in London, England or Stirling, Scotland through a unique study abroad opportunity that emphasizes global connections and cross-culture experiences.

This year, 15 students will attend at the Arcadia London Center, while 13 will enroll in the University of Stirling.

“Study abroad was one of the reasons that I decide to come to Arcadia,” said Nicholas Schiavo ’22, a Political Science major who study in London. “I looked at what the University had to offer now and even down the road. This really gives me a great chance to explore the world– and it all starts with FYSAE.”

While Schiavo is looking ahead to even more study abroad opportunities, he’s not letting this one pass him by. He’s already planning to visit a friend in Scotland. But he’s not the only one planning to reconnect with friends.

“I’ve had a pen pal in France since seventh grade,” said Katy North ’22, a Sports Psychology major who will be in Stirling for the semester. “We’re going to try and meet up. We’ve kept in contact since then, and this will be the first time we meet in-person.”

Other things students are looking forward to include climbing Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Scotland; beaching in Italy; and hiking Hadrian’s Wall. However, as North put it, school comes first. Schiavo noted that as a Political Science major, he can’t wait to learn about Brexit and the future of British and European relations, as well as the role of the monarchy in the government.

“Everyone keeps telling me to say ‘hi’ to the Queen,” said Schiavo. “So, I’m trying to see the royal family.”

Each year, admitted students are invited to apply for FYSAE based on their academic accomplishments. FYSAE students earn a full semester of credits while abroad, similar to their Glenside campus counterparts.
