Arcadia University Women’s Basketball Claims Ramapo Tip-off Title
Sophomore guard Mary Badeen scored a game-high 20-points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field and a 5-for-8 performance from three while pulling down nine rebounds and notching seven steals to lead the Arcadia University women’s basketball team to a 74-64 win over SUNYIT in the championship game of Ramapo College’s Roadrunner Tip-off Saturday.
Badeen was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by fellow sophomore guard Samantha Caligiuri.
The Knights are now 2-0 for the season, while Wildcats fell to 1-1 with the loss.
Sophomore guard Dominique Hassinger netted 14 points with five rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Caligiuri finished the game with 13 points, four assists and four steals. Sophomore guard Maureen Fiocca chipped in with nine points, while junior forward Victoria Roukas fell just short of a double-double with eight points and nine boards.
Senior guard Abbey Hanehan scored 17 points with four rebounds and three assists to lead SUNYIT, while junior forward Tierney McGlynn scored 14 points with three assists and two steals. Sophomore forward Deasia Goodson also fell just shy of a double-double with eight points and a game-high 12 boards.
Arcadia never trailed in the game, opening the contest with a 16-3 run that started with Roukas knocking down a jumper in the opening minute and was capped by a two-point bucket from senior guard Victoria Mazzeo 6:38 into the contest.
SUNYIT chipped away at that lead and pulled back within one, 37-36, after McGlynn drained a pair of free throws with 2:07 left in the first half, but the Knights responded with a 9-2 run to close the half and take a 46-38 into the locker room the break.
Arcadia led 62-54 before scoring six straight points to open its biggest lead of the game at 14 points, 68-54 with 8:43 to go in the game. The Wildcats answered with a 10-0 run to pull back within four, but the Knights scored each of the final six points over the final four minutes of play for the 74-64 final.
Points off turnovers was once again the key to Arcadia’s victory. The Knights scored 28 points off 24 SUNYIT turnovers, while the Wildcats managed just seven points off 11 turnovers by the Knights.
Arcadia will continue its six-game road trip Tuesday when it heads to Pennsylvania College of Technology for a 7 p.m. non-conference contest.
