The U.S.-accredited International Relations and Diplomacy, MA at the American Graduate School (AGS) in Paris provides students with the knowledge, skills, and contacts to pursue a career in a large range of branches of international affairs, including intergovernmental organizations, NGOs, government, diplomacy, international business, journalism, and academia. It is a two-year program, and can also be undertaken part-time or on an 18-month accelerated track.

Courses are taught entirely in English, in Paris, France; no knowledge of French language is required to enroll. As an option, students may spend one semester in the United States.

A unique aspect of this international affairs program is its international character. The French setting of the school, the American educational process, and the multicultural classroom environment at AGS all combine to enhance the international experience of students. Furthermore, as a host to the headquarters of many intergovernmental organizations, NGOs, and international corporations, Paris offers a perfect stage to study international relations.

Foreign Policy Formulation and Diplomacy*

Required Course

Develop an understanding of the techniques and tactics of diplomacy and international law and become familiar with the role of foreign ministries and embassies. You will learn to identify the present trends of modern diplomacy, with emphasis on the role of the United Nations. To equip students for careers in international affairs.

Theory and Origins of Global Conflict*

Elective Course

Explore the role of violence and conflict, both threatened and explicit, in international politics. Notions of the balance of power and war and peace are discussed in both historical and conceptual frameworks, in order to provide greater insight into the nature of international conflicts.

International Environmental Politics*

Elective Course

Study the controversies and politics of international environmental law and politics, to explore global environmental issues that the planet faces, critically assess the nature of problems encountered and discuss workable solutions for sustainable development in order to avoid a "tragedy of the commons." Learn how to critically analyze the international arena of environmental law, policy, politics, and problematics with special reference to international environmental agenda-setting and decision-making, coalition-building and mobilization amongst states (and non-state entities) to achieve cooperation.
