Creative Writing Major

The Creative Writing major at Arcadia University fosters emergent writers and helps them develop their craft through participation in strategically sequenced writing workshops and through the intense study of literature from a craft perspective. Students in particular get a sense of writing in the 21st century and build skills in multiple genres. 

Through this program, students will assess the value of writing including the importance of engaging with the diversity of literary voices, cultural experiences, and perspectives; assess the value of writing; develop and demonstrate through writing submissions a strong foundation in the fiction and poetry genres; study and produce written work in many literary genres including fiction, poetry, non-fiction, children’s writing, screenwriting; gain a deep understanding of and apply craft terms such as narrative, point of view, character, conflict, tone, theme, etc, to the study of literary works, the work of peers and their own work; analyze and gain an appreciation of a broad and diverse selection of literary works from a craft perspective, examining the writers’ craft choices; develop as a writer in a supportive, inclusive and active community of writers through classroom interaction in writing workshop courses, one-on-one conferences with instructors, and through participation in visiting writer events and workshops.

Upon completion of the program, students will have cultivated the above mentioned skills and will be prepared for a career of their choosing.
