In today’s world, the boundaries between art and technology are becoming increasingly blurred. As a result, creating a dedicated area of study that bridges these domains allows for the exploration of synergies, encouraging novel forms of artistic expression and innovation. This approach acknowledges that art and technology are no longer isolated fields but rather dynamic collaborators, and it seeks to harness their combined potential.
Students in the Art and Technology major will explore a vibrant learning environment where creativity converges with technology. Our flexible curriculum blends traditional art skills with cutting-edge technology, empowering students to gain expertise in visual arts, digital fabrication techniques, and computer science. Each student will make decisions on the focus of their interests and, together with their advisor, create an educational pathway to meet their goals. Guided by faculty in the Visual Arts, Computer Science, and Media and Communications this degree helps to prepare students for diverse career opportunities. In a world increasingly reliant on digital technologies, individuals who can bridge the gap between art and technology are in high demand. Graduates with experience in this area are well-prepared for careers where technology is integrated into a creative process.
Explore the technology surrounding computer-aided-design/computer-aided-manufacturing (CAD/CAM) and its creative applications within art practices. Learn how the CAD/CAM process is particularly well-suited for certain tasks, including the creation of multiples, for fabrication of functional/kinetic components, iterative prototyping of complex structures, scalable design, construction of large structures from repeated simple components, and more.
Gain an understanding of computer systems, the use of structured programming concepts, algorithm development, debugging, and data analysis. Explore a high-level programming language. You will explore Java as an introductory language.
Learn about all phases of video production through independent thinking, rigorous planning, purposeful and reflective ideas, and collaborative group work. Acquire skills in conceptualizing ideas, planning for production, preparing storyboards and shooting scripts, camera operation, and lighting and editing. Prepare for further training and practice in the art form, with greater complexity in using technologies, themes, and styles. You will practice in studio and field recording as well as editing and group work.
