Dr. Favian Martín, associate director of the Center for Antiracist Scholarship, Advocacy, and Action (CASAA) and associate professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Arcadia University, was awarded the 2022 Division of Critical Criminology & Social Justice (DCCSJ) Teaching Award during a ceremony on Nov. 17. 

The award recognizes an individual who has made a significant impact on the teaching of critical criminology at the local, state, regional, national, or international level. 

“Dr. Martín’s commitment to critical criminology and anti-racism is evident in the vast array of innovative classroom activities, extracurricular pedagogical endeavors, and the skilled mentorship he offers his students,” said the DCCSJ in a statement. “Dr. Martín seeks out opportunities to expose students to critical criminological texts and ideas that counter mainstream course content. [He also] takes his commitment to critical pedagogy outside of the classroom by encouraging his students to engage in social justice action, organizing events and taking part in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives around campus.”

Dr. Martín’s primary research interests focus on race and crime related issues, particularly involving American Indians. His current research focuses on corporate crime within the beer industry. More recently, he is researching the connection with racism and dark tourism through the lens of ghost criminology. He also assisted with the Pennsylvania Innocence Project and teaches courses on race, crime and justice, victimology, hate crimes, and criminology at Arcadia.
