Through Arcadia’s Sociology program, you’ll examine equity and injustices in social institutions and systems. Our students learn to think, read, and write critically about how organizations influence how we live and interact as groups.
As a Sociology major, you’ll:
Required Course
Learn through an introduction to social theory, with emphasis on the founders of sociological theory. Explore how to read and apply social theory, as well as the content of the major theorist’s arguments. In the second half of the course, you will examine theorists working in the tradition of Marx, Weber, and Durkheim and how theoretical arguments are adapted to address issues that arise in the post-modern world.
Elective Course
Explore the multiple ways that social processes and culture construct sexuality. You will study social science research on human sexuality, the meanings of sex and gender from a sociological perspective, and the cultural mythologies that shape and inform our emotions, behaviors, and attitudes.
Elective Course
Discover how social movements are integral for social change and justice. Explore social movement, protest, and advocacy/activism. You will engage with social movement theory, including resource mobilization, media representation, and movement framing, and link theory to movements in Philadelphia/Pennsylvania. Not just as an outside observer, you will attend organizational meetings and forums of your choice and write field notes and reports.
