Vira I. Heinz Scholarship Recipients Present ‘Art Expression Across Three Nations’
On Jan. 25, Caitlyn Black ’18, Michelle Mendia ’19, and Michele Freire ’18, recipients of the 2017 Vira I. Heinz Women in Global Leadership Scholarship, shared their study abroad experiences through “Art Expression Across Three Nations,” a one-night exhibition representing the artistic cultures of Spain, Taiwan, and the Czech Republic.
Through the Vira I. Heinz program, Mendia studied at the University of Granada in Granada, Spain; Black attended National Chengchi University in Taipei, Taiwan; and Freire studied at the Council on International Educational Exchange Study Center in Prague, Czech Republic.
“[At my exhibit], attendees were able to create their own masks with particular colors and patterns that portray characters from the Peking Opera,” said Black, who presented on the importance of opera in Taiwanese culture. “This was a great opportunity to learn about three vastly different countries while creating art that represents social issues, traditions, or values that are specific to each.”
